8:10 AM: First Widespread Snow Event Of Winter

1248As a cold front moved through last night with a strong cold air mass surging into the region, light rain spread into th area late last night before gradually changing over to snow from north to south. At this time, northern NJ, SE NY and southern CT are reporting light to moderate snow, which will continue through 9 AM before ending. Meanwhile, NYC and Long Island, which are reporting a mix of rain/snow or rain, will continue to change over to snow as well throughout the next 1/2 to 1 hour, which is expected to continue falling through 9-10 AM before gradually ending.

Surface temperatures are warm to support immediate accumulations of the snowfall, with most places likely to pick up a coating or less. However, locally higher totals are possible under more sustained heavier bursts of snowfall, especially over southern CT. After the snow ends, cloud cover will clear with mostly sunny skies by the late afternoon and evening, with high temperatures slightly rising into the upper 30s to low 40s before quickly falling into the upper 20s-low 30s in NYC and low-mid 20s elsewhere, including the upper 10s for interior areas. The next forecast update will be posted tonight.
