Correct Answer:
November 1-15 – 2 votes
Date of first widespread snowfall: Tuesday, 11/12

The last few winters started unusually early, with the first (and most significant) snowfall of the winter of 2011-12 falling on October 29, and the first snow of the winter of 2012-13 falling on November 7. This year’s first widespread snow event fell on Tuesday, November 12, as a strong cold front moved through the region with precipitation lagging behind the front, which along with strong cold air advection resulted in a changeover to snow showers across the entire area during the morning hours. Brief bursts of moderate snow were observed especially east and south of NYC, with snow amounts generally up to a coating but with totals locally up to 1/2-1 inch in Long Island and 1-2 inches in Connecticut.
